iOS 9 Cellular Data Not Working Fix

When iOS 9 arrived last week it brought to the table a host of new features and fixes, but like all new ventures it also brought to the table a few bugs! For me personally the issue I was faced with was the problem trying to connect to the mobile network (note I am on a Vodafone PAYG tariff).

Basically to cut a long story short I was getting errors stating the mobile data network could not connect to the relevant service.

I tried the usual fixes i.e. resetting network settings, restoring the phone from a previous backup and even re-downloading the APN settings from the text message Vodafone sent me, sadly nothing would work.

Fix is simple!

Because I was getting annoyed with the problem I must have been blinded to how obvious the fix was – but one that could have easily been avoided!

In a nutshell the problem was the phone downloaded the wrong APN settings for the PAYG network – so even with a reset it would download the wrong settings over and over again.

Note: This fix corresponds to the Vodafone network, but in theory this should be adaptable on any phone with the Cellular data problem. Just pop into your local sim-dealer (i.e. EE, Vodafone) to get them to change the settings if you are not sure.

However here are the steps I used to fix the problem..

  1. On your iPhone Go to Settings > Mobile Data.
  2. Now select Mobile Data Network

Inside here enter these settings for the Mobile Data section (Vodafone PAYG only, but check with your own sim supplier for the relevant settings).

MOBILE DATA

APN: pp.vodafone.co.uk

Username: wap

Password: wap

LTE Setup (Optional): I left this section blank, but I was still able to get 4G Support

MMS

APN: pp.vodafone.co.uk

Username: wap

Password: wap

MMSC: http://mms.vodafone.co.uk

MMS Proxy: 212.183.137.012:8799

MMS Max Message Size 307200

MMS UA Prof URL (this was blank)

PERSONAL HOTSPOT

APN: pp.vodafone.co.uk

Username: wap

Password: wap

Now when I turn on the mobile data it connects every time! So if you get the error trying to connect to your mobile data network it is because iOS 9 is pulling down the wrong settings!

Hopefully this will help anyone else who is scuppered by this problem.
